Organisations, units of organisations, individuals (actors) have different kinds of relationships. There are lines of command, communication, co-operation, inputs and outputs delivery, sanctioning and financial lines.

It is possible to draw a map of relationships between actors involved in a certain process, using different types of lines for different types of relationships. Arrows can be used to present the flows of the goods, services and money. The thickness of the lines presents the importance, frequency or volume of the relationship. This is in particular important when there are several similar relationships. It is possible to use different symbols to present the performance of the relationships on basis of issues like
